Sôboku was born in Osaka. Under the influence of his nephew Jûtaro Kuroda (1887-1870) he studied Western painting under Asai Chû (1856-1907) and in 1902 at the Kyoto Art school. In 1915, after his membership of the Kansai Bijutsuin he became a pupil of Takeuchi Seihô (1864-1942) and in 1918 of Tsuchida Bakusen (1887-1936). After the war he painted mostly Western style landscapes.
