Eigaku was born in Kyoto where he studied Kanô style painting with Kanô Eishun (1769-1816), his father-in-law and adopted father. He became an important Kanô artist of the Kyoto branch and like his adopted father he worked in the Imperial Palace. His painting style caught quite some influences of the Shijô style.
