Yano Tetsuzan was born in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. From 1912, he studied under Komura Suiun (1874-1945) in Tokyo. He moved to Osaka in 1918 where he studied under Tomioka Tessai (1837-1924). In 1920 his work was accepted for the Teiten national exhibition for the first time. In 1921 he participated in the foundation of the Nihon Nanga-in art society. He strove to modernize the Nanga genre and in 1939 founded the Kankonsha Salon to present modern Nanga. After the war he continued to serve as a member and judge of the Nitten, and in 1943 established the All Japan Ink Painting Association.
