He was born in Osaka as the second son of a painting mounter. He moved to Kyôto where the Kikuchi family adopted him. First he studied with Kanô painter Shino Hôen and in 1881 he went to studio of Konô Bairei (1844-1895), where he stayed for four years. Most of his maturity he was a teacher at the Kyôto Municipal School of Fine Arts and Crafts. After 1903, at the top of his fame, he decided to specialize on Kachôga only. In 1915 he was commissioned to paint the murals in the Japanese room at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands and stayed in Europe for three years.
