When he was 22 years old a friend of his father's, Watanabe Koshi, adopted him into the Watanabe family. In 1878 he travelled to Europe to make a survey of European Art and he exhibited some of his paintings in Paris, for which he received a silver medal. The same trip took him to America. After his return, he became editor of the Bijutsu Sekai, "Art of the World", abandoned the Yôsai methods and changed his style into this unmistakable style he is known for and which had a major influence on Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908) and Kaburagi Kiyokata (1878-1973).
