Gitô was a native of Bizen Province. After he moved to Kyôto he became a pupil Go Shun (1752-1811). He became an important member of the Shijô school, but because of his early death he never reached the stature of Matsumura Keibun (1779-1843) and Okamoto Toyohiko (1773-1845).
