Hakuin was a social worker and a Japanese-style painter of the Meiji and early Showa periods. He was born in Kasaoka, Bicchu (Okayama Prefecture) at the Jyoshin-ji temple of the Jodo Shinshu sect, where he became a monk. He studied literati painting under Tsubakiya Naritomi. In 1903 he established the Ganrou Nursery School in Kasaoka to care for orphans, using his painting fees to cover his expenses. And in 1923, she established Junwa Girls' School and became its principal.
