He was born in Kasaoka, Bicchu (Okayama Prefecture) at the Jyoshin-ji temple of the Jodo Shinshu sect, where he became a monk. He studied literati painting under Tsubakiya Naritomi. In 1903 he established the Ganrou Nursery School in Kasaoka to care for orphans, using his painting fees to cover his expenses.
