Chinnen was the son of Onishi Keisai (1773_1829). With Suzuki Nanrei (1775-1844) they are considered the best Maruyama-Shijô painters in Edo and as least as good as their contemporaries in Kansai. Chinnen, as well as Nanrei, studied under Watanabe Nangaku (1767 -1813) when he came to Edo to teach the Maruyama style. Chinnen also studied with his father and with Tani Bunchô (1763 -1840).
