Nakabayashi Chikutô (1776-1853) Nanga LandscapeSigned: Chikutô Nakabayashi Seishô sha Seals: Seishô noin, Chikutô sanjin, Enka hitsu min (bt) Technique: sumi on paper 123 x 26.6 Date: summer of 1816 Mounting: cream raw silk 186 x 38.7 Condition: worn at the bottom roller, otherwise very good Chikutô is regarded as a theorist of the Nanga School and is as such of great interest because at the beginning of the nineteenth century he introduced the conservative Nanga style to the Kansai area. Chikutô was the son of a Nagoya doctor, but at the age of fifteen he became a protégé of the rich collector Kamiya Ten'yû (1721-1801) at whose house he saw and studied Chinese paintings. With his friend Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856), he went to Kyoto in 1802. Chikutô moved between Kyoto and Nagoya for a number of years but in 1815 finally settled in his hometown.
