For centuries a silent breeze blows through the branches.

The Isuzu River (Isuzugawa) flows past the Ise shrine, which is rebuilt every twenty years with sugi (Cryptomeria) trees from the shrine’s own grounds.

Kansetsu was the son Hashimoto Kaikan (1854-1935) and his parental home was a meeting point for scholars and artists from all over the world. He studied with Takeuchi Seihô (1864-1942) for twenty years, but he was also greatly influenced by Chinese painters. In 1921 he went to Europe and he travelled to China at least thirty times. Kansetsu was a regular exhibitor at the Bunten and the Teiten, and an immensely influential figure in the Kyoto art world. His former Kyoto house is now the Kansetsu Memorial Museum.
